The Nature Conservancy has estimated that the Etowah River has more imperiled species (17 fish species and 16 invertebrate species) than any other river system of its size in the southeastern United States , thus restoration at this site would have secondary positive influence on the species. The restoration site was formally a row crop farm where some of the highest corn yield per acre was harvested.
